InMobi Mobile Insights Report Quarter 1, 2011 vs Quarter 1, 2012: Mobile advertising grows 156% in Australia; Tablet device enters top 5 handsets

Sydney, Australia, April 24, 2012

InMobi, the largest independent mobile ad network, released its latest Mobile Insights Report today, highlighting an impressive growth of mobile advertising in Australia. The report reveals a 156% growth in mobile impressions in Australia over the past year, making it one of the fastest growing advertising platforms available. This growth has been impacted hugely by a 219% increase in smartphone impressions in the Australian mobile market. “More people are choosing to use smartphones, which is why we have seen such a huge increase in smartphone impressions on our network,” says Francisco Cordero, General Manager and Regional Director of InMobi Australia and New Zealand. The report also shows iOS’ lead over Android increase, with iOS dominating at 54% and Android sitting at 23.6%. This is further supported by the fact that three out of the top five handsets are now Apple devices, including the Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad.

Top 5 Handsets: % Share of Impressions
Australia Q1, 2012
1. Apple iPhone 43.7%
2. Apple iPod 5.6%
3. Samsung GT-I9100 ( Galaxy S II ) 4.9%
4. Apple iPad 4.7%
5. RIM BlackBerry 9700 4.0%

“Compared to last year, we are starting to see a strong usage of tablet devices, especially Apple iPads, across our Australian network. As a result, it is the first time that a tablet device has entered our top five handsets in Australia,” says Mr Cordero. “In the US and UK, Apple iPads sit in third and second place, so following the global trend we expect to see a continued growth in tablets in Australia this year. This of course will be driven by the recent release of the new iPad, as well as the reduced pricing of the iPad 2.” The report also reveals Nokia’s operating system has lost a significant share of the market, shifting from second position 12 months ago to fourth position, with Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android now in the lead.
