InMobiMobile Insights Report: North America mobile advertising market grows 50% in 90 days

iPhone4 remains Top Device in North America, but Android OS leads the market

SAN MATEO, California, October 19, 2011 -- Today, InMobi, the world's largest independent mobile ad network, released its Quarterly Mobile Insights Report: North American Edition, July through September, 2011. The report signals significant growth in the region, with North America mobile impressions increasing a staggering 50% in just 90 days. InMobi now boasts nearly 27 billion impressions per quarter in the region. While the report uncovered that the Apple iPhone 4 remains the top device in the NA region with 5.2% share, followed by the BlackBerry Torch 9800 and BlackBerry Curve 8520, each with 4.2%, theAndroid OS now represents 40% of all ads in the region, nearly twice the amount of Apple (21%). Android has shown its importance in the market by delivering consistent growth over the last nine months and captured nearly seven share points in the last 90 days, whereas Apple has lost share. On a global basis, Android becomes the number one OS for the first time in Q3 2011, surpassing Nokia OS.

Top 2OS Systems: % Share Available Impressions in North America
  % Regional Share (Q2 2011) % Regional Share(Q3 2011) Pt. Chg
Android 33.5% 40.3% +6.8
iPhone OS 29.6% 20.8% -8.8

Commenting on the broader industry implications, James Lamberti, VP Global Research & Marketing, InMobi, says: "Consumers have truly embraced mobile and we've seen a tremendous spike in mobile usage over the quarter. The significant growth trend that we have measured quarter-on-quarter hasn't slowed down, highlighting the need to implement effective mobile advertising campaigns, especially in the run up to the holiday season." Commenting on the findings of the study, Surag Patel, Director, Global Research, InMobi, adds: "Android's OS growth will face increased competition, following Apple's rollout of iOS5 and the iPhone 4S this month. However, the numbers certainly indicate that Android's lead will be tough to catch on a global scale, even if Apple makes gains in North America. RIM's OS gained a similar percentage to iOS last quarter, but it will be interesting to see the true effect that its recent network outage has on its growth in the coming months." Lamberti and Patel will host a webinar on Tuesday, October 25, at 12 p.m. EDT (9 a.m. PDT), presenting the global findings of the recent report and answering questions on market implications.
